Drifting off in a bed with your partner sounds like an ideal relationship, going to sleep together and waking up together, but in the real world that picture of a perfect life is far from reality for most people. Snoring, talking, fidgeting and duvet hogging are among many of the reasons why couples are now sleeping in separate beds.
Surveys carried out by Surrey University found that the usual British way of sleeping in a 4ft6 double bed can have more harm than good to a relationship, especially when you consider that a standard single bed is 3ft, which means you have less sleeping space than your child does in their bed. Here at Click 4 Beds we all love sleeping, that’s why we work for a bed company! Here are some facts about sleep that we’ve found for you to ponder.
- REM is called ‘rapid eye movement’ and is when our eyes move under our eye lids and is our deepest form of sleep
- REM sleep starts once we have been asleep for about 90 minutes and it comes in random bursts during the night, in totally approximately two hours
- During REM sleep, we are pretty much paralysed, apart from our heart, diaphragm, intestine muscles, blood and eyes
- We spend around 1/3 of our lives sleepng
- We sleep for about six years or 2,100 days of our lives
- The world record for the longest time without sleep is 18 hours, 21 days and 40 minutes
- You should fall to sleep within 10 to 15 minutes of trying
- We sleep on average three hours less than other primates
- Teenagers and babies should have 10 hours of sleep, adults need eight hours and seniors only require six hours
- We can take a quick nap with our eyes open
- ‘Good night, sleep tight, don’t let the bed bugs bite’ comes from Shakespeare times when mattresses were filled with pieces of straw and were secured on bed frames by rope
